Yoga is not simply a way to get in a good workout. It truly has the power to heal the mind, body, and soul. Not enough of us in the fitness community are aware of the impact yoga can have on trauma victims!

26% of youth in the United States will endure a traumatic event before the age of four, according to a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report from 2011. Children living in impoverished communities not only are more likely to experience trauma, but they also have access to fewer resources necessary to heal from their trauma that can be greatly impairing in day-to-day life.

The pillars of yoga, posture, meditation, and controlled breathing, allow children to learn how to respond to stressful situations, should they occur. Furthermore, yoga allows all those that practice it to understand the connection between their body and their peace of mind.

To continue, The Georgetown Law Center’s report on Poverty and Inequality endorses the effectiveness of trauma-specialized yoga programs for young girls in the juvenile justice system, due to the mounting evidence that the impact of trauma can be overcome through the practice of yoga.
