Rehabilitation is a psychologically and physically challenging experience for female prison inmates. Separation from their families and past traumatic events in their lives bear down upon them. A sufficient amount of research on yoga in prisons has revealed that it fosters the inward healing of female inmates, reducing stress, boosting mood and mental well-being, anxiety, and aggression. It also results in better control of cognitive faculties, enhanced memory, and proper emotional regulation.

Projects associated with yoga and meditation in Federal prisons

According to an article published in the NCBI, the number of women in federal prisons has increased in the past 20 years. Meditation and yoga enable women inmates to overcome their traumatic experiences and find peace and tranquility by focussing on their recovery. Various organizations are offering programs for prison inmates. Some of which have been said below:

  1. The Prison Project by Siddha Yoga– Is situated in California, Oakland. The prison project offers support by educating incarcerated people on the importance of yoga and meditation. Facilitators provide Satsang practices for the inmates at federal prisons.

  2. Trauma-informed yoga practice –The Prison Yoga Project offers training programs in prisons with a deep understanding of the need for a positive socio-cultural environment necessary for rehabilitation. The organization extends its support not only through encouraging physical activity but by also providing books for the prisoners free of cost.

  3. Yoga Behind Bars – It is of primary importance to reinstate prison inmates to their former selves. Traumatic experiences often leave behind scars that are impossible to reverse. YBB is one such organization that allows individuals to connect to themselves through yoga and meditation. Such has been the impact of the programs that many inmates upon release have engaged themselves in volunteering services. Thus, the process of rehabilitation aims at providing service to the community.

  4. Transformation Yoga Project -Constructing a healthy lifestyle for women prison convicts helps them to maintain a desire to realign with their community. With liberation, justice, and enumeration as their focal points in the treatment and recovery of incarcerated individuals, the TYP has successfully educated several instructors on the importance of building resilience in people. A person's inherent ability to connect to their mind and body is driven by a trauma-sensitive approach. Breath control is one of the ways how individuals and especially pregnant women can gain composure. https://transformationyogaproject.org/what-is-trauma-sensitive-yoga/

Taking a look at the feasibility of Federal prisons in providing facilities of yoga and meditation

A rising population of women prison inmates in the federal prisons makes it imperative for officials to provide adequate rehabilitation facilities. Collaboration between the federal prisons and yoga organizations will foster a positive move towards the rehabilitation of women prison inmates.

Individuals who belong to the margins of society are misconstrued. They are termed violent and aggressive, without being allowed to develop themselves, channelize their emotions and vulnerability towards inward healing, both physically and psychologically. Federal prisons must provide female prison inmates with yoga and meditation as complementary techniques for restoration.
