The CORRELATION BETWEEN WOMEN IN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND WOMEN COMMITTING CRIMES SUCH AS HARBORING DRUGS FOR THEIR PARTNER

My mind floods with questions once I hear stories about a woman being head over heels in love initially and then drowning in sorrows after a short time. I keep thinking what kind of love can result into abuse. Women being victimized by men has always been a serious problem in our society. In many cases men are encountered of being dominating or taking authorized roles which ensures women to stay dependent on them that may entrap women into an abusive relationship, a patriarchal society as we call it. But is she needed to be treated this manner within the first place? “Why aren’t you leaving” has always been an unanswered question to several of us. But is it really easy to leave your significant one? The answer is usually a NO.

Abusive relationship doesn’t always involve violence but also can be emotional or verbal or sexual which may include degradation, manipulation or establishing power and control towards their partner. Seeking help may also not lead to a better situation because of the failure of social or family respond towards this kind of situation which might lead women to engage themselves in some type of illegal activities. There might be many reasons why women entrapped in an abusive relationship commit crimes where committing crimes in response to their partner threats would always be one of the main reason to look after. Perhaps sexual molestation or physical violence may be a reason for persuading involvement in illegal activities but, also women may get involved in this kind of activities as a copping mechanism with their abusive partner as getting indulged in drugs or harboring drugs for their partner.

There might be a list of crimes and reasons why women commit crimes being in an abusive relationship:

  • Fear can lead to a situation where you cannot think right. Fear of your own partner can force you to do things you never wanted. You start to do crimes or illegal activities in order to keep yourself up. Drugs or alcohol related crimes seems to be very usual in this kind of situations. Women indulge themselves with drugs and alcohol offenses for themselves or for their partner. They might relay on drugs to numb their emotions, feelings and their thought patterns which can eventually be a reason of addiction. Sometimes, women might think using drugs along with their partner or agree to do illegal activities can help to avoid further victimization which encourages them to commit crimes.

  • Women seems to indulge themselves in activities like fraud or theft as a means of surviving or resisting abuse from their partner. Especially mothers are seen to be participating in this kind of illegal activities for their children where the money obtained are used to feed or care for their children during or after an abusive relationship.

  • It has been found that women are most likely to commit crimes which are non-violent. But, in few cases it has been seen that women commit violent crimes as a means of retaliate their partner out of aggression or defend themselves during assaults.

In many aspects abusive relationship is seemed to be directly correlated with women committing crimes. In this context, it is possible that women become criminals in order to survive. Therefore, it is important to examine and understand women criminality before coming up with decisions.
