RYT-200 vs RYT-300 vs RYT-500: Which One Do You Need?

Yoga teacher training stationary.

If you’ve settled the “should I do this” question and landed on yes, there’s usually one thing standing between you and enrolling: which certification is actually the right one to start with? RYT-200, RYT-300, and RYT-500 all show up in the same searches, often with little explanation of how they relate to each other. Here’s the breakdown, in plain terms.

RYT-200: Your Foundation, and Your Required Starting Point

The RYT-200 (Registered Yoga Teacher, 200-hour) is the entry-level certification recognized by Yoga Alliance, and it’s the credential every other yoga certification is built on top of. There’s no way to skip it — even advanced trainings require an RYT-200 as the prerequisite.

This is the right choice if:

  • You’re new to teaching and want the credential that qualifies you to lead classes for the first time

  • You want a strong grounding in yoga philosophy and ethics, foundational anatomy, and core teaching technique before going further

  • You’re not sure yet how deep you want to go, and want to start with the essential 200 hours before deciding on more

Think of the RYT-200 less as “the beginner option” and more as the non-negotiable foundation. Every teacher, no matter how advanced, started here.

RYT-300: Going Deeper, For Teachers Ready to Specialize

The RYT-300 builds directly on your existing RYT-200. It’s an advanced training that goes further into cueing and anatomy across dozens of poses, deeper philosophical study, and the practical side of building a yoga business. Completing your RYT-300 is also what allows you to upgrade your existing RYT-200 to a full RYT-500 designation with Yoga Alliance.

This is the right choice if:

  • You already hold an RYT-200 (from ShareLove.Fund or elsewhere) and want to deepen your expertise

  • You’re ready to teach more advanced students or refine your cueing and sequencing skills

  • You want the credibility of a 500-hour designation but prefer to complete it in two focused stages rather than one long program

RYT-500: The Full Package, Bundled

The RYT-500 isn’t a separate curriculum — it’s ShareLove.Fund’s bundle of the RYT-200 and RYT-300 trainings together, so you complete your full 500-hour education in a single enrollment instead of two. Once finished, you submit both certificates to Yoga Alliance for your RYT-500 upgrade.

This is the right choice if:

  • You already know you want to teach seriously, and don’t want to pause between your 200 and 300-hour trainings

  • You’d rather handle enrollment once and move through your education continuously

  • You want the most comprehensive credential available, with the strongest signal to studios and clients that you’ve invested fully in your teaching foundation

A Quick Way to Decide

Ask yourself one question: Am I testing the waters, or am I already committed?

If you’re not sure yet whether teaching is for you, start with the RYT-200. It’s the required foundation regardless of where you end up, and it gives you a genuine, credentialed entry point without over-committing before you’ve taught a single class.

If you already know this is the path — whether because you’ve been practicing for years, you’ve got a second career in mind, or you simply don’t want to stop and restart your education — the RYT-500 bundle gets you there in one continuous program, often at better value than purchasing the trainings separately down the line.

Beyond the Core Three

Once you’ve built your foundation, ShareLove.Fund also offers specialty certifications that layer on top of any of these: RPYT (prenatal), RCYT (children’s), and YACEP (postnatal). These let you focus your teaching on the population you’re most drawn to serving, whenever you’re ready to add that layer.

Why Train With ShareLove.Fund

Whichever level you choose, all of ShareLove.Fund’s trainings are Yoga Alliance-approved, 100% online, and self-paced, so you can move through your certification around your actual schedule. And because ShareLove.Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your enrollment funds the same training for incarcerated women and at-risk youth pursuing a vocational yoga degree of their own.

If you think you’ll want to move through multiple levels or specialties over time, our VIP Access membership unlocks every course we offer — a $3,500 value — for $199 a month.

Ready to Choose?

There’s no wrong starting point, only the one that matches where you are right now. If you’re new, start at 200. If you’re ready to go all in, go straight to 500.
