Ever wondered why people commit crimes? There might be many reasons that pop up in our mind when we think about this. And, so the existence of prisons. Prisons are a means for criminals to serve time as punishment, but as we think about this, only punishment is not all what the prisoners should get through, but also it should help the person reintegrate back into society. Old prisons were not really a proper place for reintegration or rehabilitation of criminals. Hence, vocational training has been introduced to prisons in the years following.

Vocational training refers to the training that emphasizes knowledge and skills required for a particular field or profession. These training mainly put stress on practical skills required for any manual job rather than the theoretical approach. And as we all believe practical applications always has greater impact on us than that of theoretical one, vocational training can be the toppings in load to your learnings which can be very beneficial in ways like learning new skills, increasing productivity, gaining better interaction skills, employment etc. In this present time, many vocational training aspects have been introduced in jails and prisons which have received a lot of appreciation. These training allow the prisoners to engage themselves in various activities like typing, book binding, agriculture, bakery etc. during their time in jail. 

The availability of employment is found to be fewer for the prisoners in society. Therefore, these training are designed to teach prisoners about the general employment skills which may lead them towards earning an honorable livelihood upon their release from the prison. The aim of vocational training in jails and prisons is not only to train prisoners for employment, but it also possesses many other benefits which may help the prisoners in development of different other attributes:

  • The vocational training not only helps the prisoners to develop a sense of self- confidence and self-esteem in them, but it also helps in development of respectful and responsive attitude towards the society. Vocational training provides wide range of activities which are intended to provide basic education to tackle illiteracy and get quipped with life.

  • The vocational training can benefit the prisoners by training them for lasting vocational adjustment, rehabilitation and reintegration. It may also bring a change in prisoner by improving work habits, work performance, work skills, creating an active interest, boosting a spirit of corporation by allowing them to work with others and also strengthening their will to work.

  • Vocational training in prisons also plays an important role in reducing recidivism by enhancing educational attainment and employability. These vocational training help in the reduction of criminal behavior of inmates and also motivates them to continue their work outside the prison which may improve their future job prospects. It was found that the inmates which were involved in vocational education or training have lower chances of returning to the prison than those who do not participate in those activities.

  • Ethnic and racial barriers are often the cause of violence in prisons. Vocational education in prison helps to break down these barriers and can significantly improve the relationship between the prisoners and staff members.

The benefits of vocational education in prisons are immense as it plays social and economic restoration of the prisoner. Hence, more facilities can be implemented in vocational learning of prisons and jails.
